Review: Come Tumbling Down
Come Tumbling Down by Seanan McGuire
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
"This is terrible. I mean, we knew it was going to be terrible when we followed a mad scientist and her dead girlfriend to a horrifying murder world, but this is bonus terrible. This is the awful sprinkles on the sundae of doom." - Sumi, filtering this quest through a Confection lens.
The fifth installment of the Wayward Children series, Come Tumbling Down, follows the story of Jack (and sort of Jill) as she returns to Eleanor West's school to gain the aid of her former schoolmates on a quest for justice. There will be battles, a collaboration with the Drowned Gods, and a whole bunch of lightning. Because the Moors is a place of mad science and monsters. You can venture along with Kade, Christopher, Cora, and Sumi as they help Jack put things right. Because currently, they are so very wrong. Jillian has taken something of Jack's and Eleanor's "No Quests" rule was meant to be broken for a circumstance just like this one, as Sumi points out to Eleanor. She wants to help Jack get back what's hers and Jill get what's coming to her. This team of chums will help save the day. Or the night, because the Moors are a pretty dark place. Jack is the best kind of monster in the world of the Moors. She's the monster that will save them.
This installment plants an important seed in the mind of readers- that of what it's like when your body doesn't feel like you. I'm sure it will be a topic we see again when we get to Kade's story.
CW: body dysphoria, body dysmorphia, decapitation, fratricide, drowning (all in true fairy tale style, but the impact of deaths are not minimized in any way.)
