Review: Cartier's Hope

Cartier's Hope by M.J. Rose
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cartier's Hope follows in the footsteps of New York Times bestselling author M. J. Rose's Tiffany Blues , weaving a tale involving the legendary Hope Diamond, Pierre Cartier, the legendary jeweler who acquired it, and a personal family mystery that reporter Vera Garland is determined to solve. Vera, a rebel in her family, seeks to get to the bottom of a blackmail scheme that she believes ultimately led to her father's death. Seeking aid from Jacob Asher, a young Russian Jewish jeweler in Cartier's employ, Vera is drawn into a precarious situation as she sees how the diamond world operates, the lengths some jewelers resort to manipulate prices and gain possession of some of the most spectacular gems.

Set against the backdrop of the gilded age that was pre-WWI New York City, Rose has woven a diverting read and characters who in the end surprise. (Particularly Vera's mother.) Plus, you just cannot beat the beauty of this book cover...
