Review: The Happy Ever After Playlist
The Happy Ever After Playlist by Abby Jimenez
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Readers of the blog know I seldom review romance-y novels but in the era of Covid-19, I'm sure everyone, including me, is looking for some positivity. The Happy Ever After Playlist offers that in spades but also touches on the very real effects of complex grieving the loss of loved ones.
Sloan is a young woman whose life has been derailed after the death of her fiancé two years before after he is killed by a drunk driver. An artist, she's been barely getting by. Her friends Kirsten and Josh have been trying to get her to reengage with life but it's just not happening for her until the day she is planning to visit her fiancé's grave and she almost hits a dog who then proceeds to jump on her car and inside through her open sunroof. Tucker has a collar. Tucker's owner has a name and a number. Sloan calls Jason for two solid weeks and finally decides this sweet dog is hers. And then Jason calls her from Australia. Jason loves his dog and wants him back. But is intrigued by Sloan. A few weeks of flirtatious texting and phone calls later, they finally meet when Jason returns and Sloan is charmed by him. Only to be stunned when Kirsten points out that Jason is also Jaxon, a rising music star. It's a rocky road for a while but of course, you know that Jimenez will give the reader a happy outcome.
This was a polished, well-written novel and Jimenez's afterward explains it's poignant inception- a personal friend of hers who suffered a similar loss and whose life was also derailed for a time as a result.
An enjoyable read that offers the positivity that many readers crave right now. The audiobook, narrated in alternating chapters by Erin Mallon as Sloan, and Zachary Webber as Jason, was excellent.
I received a courtesy audiobook copy of this novel from Hachette Audio via Libro.fm in exchange for an honest review.
