Review: Over the Woodward Wall (The Up-and-Under #1)

Over the Woodward Wall by A. Deborah Baker
My rating: 4 of 5 stars

Over the Woodward Wall is a children's novel by author Seanan McGuire, written under the pen name of A. Deborah Baker, a character from her Locus and Alex Award-winning and Hugo Award nominated novel Middlegame. Two children, Avery and Zib, from the same town but of very different personalities, set out to school one day only to have the paths direct them over the titular Woodward Wall, into a fantastical world of talking owls, crows, kings and queens and drowned girls (think mermaids).

This short novel, first in the "Up and Under" series, introduces the reader to Avery, Zib, the Crowgirl and Niamh. The book is imaginative in the way the author's Wayward Children series is but more suitable for younger readers. The book leaves the children's travels open but does not really end in a cliffhanger, other than the children's parents wondering where on earth they've gone.

I listened to the audiobook edition of the novel, narrated by Heath Miller, who does wonderful character voicing.
