Song of the Current is a jewel of a YA novel, set in a fictional world's Riverlands. Caro Oresteia, a seventeen-year-old wherry mate to her father Nick, is waiting for her fate to find her, and she thinks it's sailing on her father's wherry, Cormorant. But the god of the river hasn't spoken to her in the language of small things or really at all, period. She's preoccupied with her future on the day her whole life is spun on its axis, her father is jailed and she has to take over a run as captain of Cormorant and deliver a mysterious box to the Margravina of Kynthessa. Thus begins an adventure. The world of the Riverlands and Caro herself are memorable. They are, in fact, memorable enough to make me survive the more than mild tinge of romance in this book unscathed and looking forward to my ARC of book two, The Whisper of the Tide!
The secondary characters of Kenté, Nereus and Fee are delightful. Markos is a little predictable for a while but he is tolerable. I loved her family situation. Yes, Caro is one of my favorite privateers. A fun YA read!
